Jan. 19th, 2007 @ 09:18 pm "But I'm Not a Racist! Honest!"
Current Mood: blahblah
So, I love how white celebrities have been mouthing off and using racists slurs (re: Michael Richards, once of Seinfeld, Big Brother UK business just to name a few), BUT OMG, they aren't racists.

Okay. Let me just say this. If you are white, you a pretty much raised to think certain racist assumptions. You are pretty much raised to be a racist. You are a racist until you get off your butt and start being accountable and responsible for privileges you enjoy simply because you're considered white. You are a racist until you confront the racist attitudes that lurk in the corners of your mind that you don't think about and don't confront. You are a racist until you get past the "but I am not like that" and the guilt you feel for not doing anything. You are a racist until you make the effort to stop racism. You are a racist until you can legitimately listen to the issues of people of color and come to an understanding and appreciation of those issues and the complexity of them. You are a racist until you understand and are willing to give up your unearned white privilege. You are a racist until you stop being in denial of your racist attitudes.

I don't understand this attitude. If saying racist things doesn't make someone racist, what does? I guess they feel they should be congratulated for not lynching anyone (or in Micheal Richards' case, just threatening to lynch someone--'cause that's not racist at all).

That's the thing. I think a lot of white people don't want to talk about race and racism honestly, because some of them think it's a thing of the past, and a majority of them are just not willing to be accountable for their internalized racism. I understand the attitude, because, as a white person, I have those moments when I don't want to acknowledge my own racism. But there has to be a point where you stop hiding behind guilt and trying to justify things and just acknowledge racist thoughts and words and acts. It will not make you a bad guy to admit to having internalized racism, because that's the first step in actively dealing with it. What will make you the bad guy is whining that you aren't a racist and ignoring the obvious.

Given the incontrovertible video evidence of his actions, Michael Richards saying "I'm not racist" is a serious bunch of doublespeak bullshit. I think white people saying "I'm not racist" is doublespeak in general - it's a "truth" that's not based on fact, but which is so important to peoples' psyche that it needs to be accepted even if it means developing a gaping blind spot to all facts that suggest otherwise.

I completely agree. It's a human thing living inside your own head. It acutally takes, I dunno EFFORT to step outside yourself and imagine another persons life, what it would be like to be someone of color for example. The problem is, if you are part of the 'privledged class' of any society, then you have absolutely no incentive to do this. Your world revolves around you and what you think and eff everyone that isn't like you. In the meantime you believe stereotypes as fact and melt down whenever you feel threatened by a person who isn't like you, not understanding that it isn't okay to say ugly stuff to people when you are angry. I have known tons of white people in my life, and some are truly not racist creatures at all. Others are politically obligated to say they are not because they don't want to face that dark corner in their hearts that hates anyone unlike themselves. Which will manifest itself in the systimatic dismissal of anyone of color as an equal or as even human. But they're not racist. I think most white people need to get a handle on what racisim is and cope with it accordingly.
